How I Started a Blog From Home as a Busy Mum - And Turned It Into Multiple Income Streams

When people talk about making money online now, everything seems to revolve around constantly being visible. Filming reels every day. Going live. Chasing trends. Showing your face constantly. Trying to keep up with algorithms that change every five minutes.
But that’s never really been me.
I’m naturally quite introverted and I’ve built a lot of my businesses quietly behind the scenes while raising six children, managing family life and juggling work around school runs, babies, nap times and complete chaos most days.
One of the biggest income streams I’ve built over the years has actually come from blogging.
Not because I became a huge influencer.
Not because I went viral.
But because I created content people were already searching for.
I started Mumtobe.com over 14 years ago after i gave birth to my first son, and over time it became so much more than “just a blog.” It became:
a traffic source
a platform for affiliate income
a place brands could discover me
a way to sell digital products
a long-term marketing tool
a business that could continue working in the background
Some of the blog posts I wrote years ago still bring in traffic and sales now through Google, Pinterest and affiliate links.
That’s the part people massively underestimate about blogging.
Unlike social media content that disappears quickly, searchable content can continue working for years.
Make Money Online with a Blog
I think a lot of people are craving slower, more sustainable ways to build income online now.
Especially mums.
Especially people who feel overwhelmed by social media.
Especially people who don’t want their entire business to depend on constantly being online.
Blogging gives you something social media often doesn’t: longevity.
A blog post can show up on Google months later.
A Pinterest pin can suddenly take off again six months after you created it.
An old article can continue generating affiliate sales while you’re asleep, on holiday or doing completely unrelated things.
That’s why blogging works so well alongside real life.
You create the content once, but it has the potential to keep working long after you hit publish.
If you sometimes feel a bit like an imposter when it comes to starting a blog or putting yourself online, this video is really reassuring. I think a lot of people assume successful bloggers are naturally confident or love being visible online, but that really isn’t always the case. This is a really good reminder that you can still build something successful without constantly showing your face or sharing your whole life online.
Blogging Fitted Around My Life - Not The Other Way Around
One of the reasons I stuck with blogging for so long is because it gave me flexibility.
I didn’t need to constantly “perform” online.
I could write blog posts during quieter moments in the day, schedule Pinterest content in advance and update older posts when I had time.
There was no pressure to be switched on 24/7.
And as a mum, that mattered.
Some seasons of life are busy. Some are exhausting. Some are survival mode.
Blogging allowed me to build something gradually in the background without needing perfect routines or huge amounts of spare time.
That’s also why I think blogging appeals to so many women looking for flexible online income streams now.
You don’t necessarily need:
a massive audience
expensive equipment
professional filming setups
confidence on camera
thousands of followers
You just need useful content people are actually searching for.
How Bloggers Actually Make Money
This is where a lot of people get confused.
The blog itself isn’t usually the product.
The blog becomes the platform that connects to multiple income streams.
Affiliate Marketing
This is one of the biggest ways bloggers monetise content.
You recommend products, services or tools you genuinely use and earn commission if somebody purchases through your link.
Pinterest Marketing
Pinterest was one of the biggest turning points for my blog traffic. Pinterest actually drives more traffic to my blog than Instagram does!
Blogging Can Lead To So Much More
Over time, blogging can naturally expand into:
digital products
memberships
courses
sponsored content
Pinterest management
freelance writing
UGC
email marketing
consulting
photography
brand partnerships
A lot of my business opportunities started because somebody discovered my content first.
That’s the power of building searchable content online.
Why Blogging Works So Well For Introverts
I think blogging is massively underrated for quieter personalities.
Not everyone wants to build a business through constant visibility.
Some people want:
flexibility
quieter work
creativity
long-term content
work they can do from home
income streams that fit around family life
That’s exactly why blogging still works.
It allows you to create content in your own time without needing to constantly show up online every single day.
Some of the most successful online businesses are built quietly in the background.
